12th November 1999

At last a review, this one from Billy Aitken who was lucky enough to catch them at their Aberdeen gig on the 4th November.

Well, the shitty Aberdeen weather and shitty Aberdeen (lack of) promotion no doubt contributed to a shitty Aberdeen crowd for 999's appearance at Glow 303. Never the less, the boys seemed unperturbed by this as they launched into their set with a storming Black Flowers For The Bride. The sound was great and the band was certainly firing on all cylinders. The response they got from the small but extremely vocal crowd encouraged them further and they continued a-pace through a healthy selection of their back catalogue. Most of the favourites got a spirited working over - Hit Me, Me and My Desire, Titanic Reaction, Emergency, The Biggest Prize In Sport, Chicane Destination, Little Red Riding Hood and many more. Despite the poor turnout, the band was in scorching form. Guy was wringing clever little lead lines out of his instrument (he really is an under rated guitarist) while Nick was doing his traditional machine gunning of the crowd. Feeling Alright With The Crew was preceded with Nick's usual little intro about being written in Brixton with the rastas while they dedicated new(ish) song, Split Personality to my mate Dave who's currently working in a hostel with a schizophrenic!  Homicide, of course, was given a mid set airing, introduced with as "Here's one you might have heard of!" with an almost straigh face by Nick.  After what seemed like only 20 minutes - it was actually an hour and twenty! - they whizzed through Nasty Nasty, said their goodnights and left the stage. The crowd weren't having it of course and, after a couple of minutes, the stamping of feet brought the guys back out for a rousing run through I'm Alive before they were off. I was a tiny bit disappointed that there was no My Street Stinks and one bloke who had shouted for No Pity ALL NIGHT would have had a wee bit let down too. Small grumbles though in the face of the excellent set we were presented with.

Before and after the show, we got the chance to have a chat with the band and all were in good spirits, even the normally brusque Guy. Nick and Arthur are real gents and we had a good bit of banter going back and forth about the European football that had been taking place that week. Pablo was his usual quiet self - very shy I think. Arthur in particular was making sure we all got a drink off their rider and went as far as taking Dave back to the door and getting his ticket money back, insisting he was on the guest list. Unfortunately, I ended up having to drive on the night of the show so they even shared out their bottles of mineral water when I turned down the offer of a beer! Eventually they had to call time (about 2am)and get off to Arbroath for the next night's gig. Before he left, Arthur made us promise to phone and tell him if the UK Subs get a better crowd when they play Glow next month. They promised to return same time next year and I for one look forward to it immensely. There's no pretence with 999. What you see is what you get and it's consistently good. I hope they still get a kick from the live thing and their other crowds on the dates were a bit better, well larger, than Aberdeen because they certainly deserve it. True pros.

There were 4 gigs that I didn't manage to post in time, but i've listed them anyway and we should have a review (or two) soon,

Date Venue
3rd November Glasgow, Nice and Sleazy
4th November Aberdeen, Glow 303
5th November Arbroath, Viewfield Hotel
6th November Edinburgh, The Attic

The following information is taken from the inside cover of the "You Us It" CD. As this CD was released in 1993, the details are no doubt in need of an update. Can you help ! If so, email me.
